NAZARETH HOME FOR STREET CHILDREN
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Nazareth Home for Street Children Foundation, Inc. was founded by Bishop Cirilo R. Almario, JR., DD, Bishop Emeritus of Malolos and the Sisters of the Divine Shepherd religious congregation, which was then governed by Mo. Ma. Fatima R. Senarillos, SDS, Superior. Bishop Almario formally opened the community on 25 October 1995 with the vision of being dedicated totally in the service of the poorest among the poor.
The project was initiated by its founders in response to the call and challenges of Pope John Paul II to give children “a future of peace".
RATIONAL
The Philippines is home to at least 1.5 million street children, a phenomenon that has rightfully become a big concern. Driven to the streets by poverty, social injustice and crowded slum conditions, these neglected, abandoned and at most times maltreated children are forced into the squalid adult environment of the streets to utilize every opportunity to eke out a living no matter how meager. In the streets, these children face a lot of exploitation, both physical and sexual. The Nazareth Home for Street Children believes that mankind owes to children the best it has to offer, not later but now. Immediate help and action are necessary, let us save them.
